History:

1969:

Southeast Chicago parents of mentally retarded children meet as an informal support group.  Discuss their children's needs and lack of community resources.  The group begins fund raising. 

1971:

South Chicago parents & Friends of Retarded Children (SCPF) was incorporated to formalize its existing structure to better meet its goal of supporting programs serving children with mental retardation.

1972 - 1975:

SCPF Board of Directors strengthened by addition of business and non-parent leadership.  Active fund raising to support activities and program organizations.

1976 - 1977:

SCPF Board of Directors begins its own program.  Secures Grant-In-Aid operating funding from the Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities (DMHDD).  Agency serves 30 clients annually, ages 16-35, in a work activities setting starting with an operating budget of $60,000. 

1981:

SCPF expands to serve an additional 20 clients entering local community residential facilities.

1981:

SCPF begins after-school and weekend recreation program serving an additional forty (40) clients.  Agency operating budget is now $340,000.00. 

1985:

SCPF annual operating budget increases to $544,000.00 due to enrollment increases. 

1988:

All SCPF programs consolidated into a new 14,000 square feet facility located at 10241 South Commercial Avenue in Chicago. 

1989:

SCPF begins its Supported Employment Program , with janitorial services contracting and In-Home Respite Care Program, serving 10 families annually.

1991:

Agency serves approximately 100 clients thru operating budget of $850,000. 

1994:

Completes major capital improvements in roofing and computer network expansion under a $90,000 capital budget plan.

1995:

Expands Supported Employment Program providing job coaching at various community retail and fast food sites.

1996:

Agency operating budget passes $1,000,000 due to successful fundraising initiative.

1997:

SCPF opens its senior citizen's center.  Begins providing contractual day services for community CILA providers.  Achieves first national accreditation thru CARF.

2000:

SCPF completes $500,000 remodeling/building expansion program.  Opens Office of Development and Public Relations to increase public support.

2001:

SCPF celebrates its first 25 years of commitment to improving the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities.

2003:

Expanded the number of individuals who receive Home & Community Based services. Expanded Development & Public Relations to increase public's awareness to our services.

2004:

Expanded the opportunities for or consumers to access evening and weekend recreation/leisure services by increasing the number of programs offered through our Recreation Services Program. Created Case Manager positions to assist families to obtain an array of services and supports. Revised the Individual Support Plan to include people first language and areas for input from our consumers and/or family members. Enhanced public relations activities in order to strengthen our ties with our local community. Expanded our annual awards program to recognize the extraordinary talents of those who support the agency. Developed an agency website which provides information regarding the agencies programs and fundraising events.
